Valentine’s Day = Love
February: The Month of Love
The month of February represents “love.” There are two important events that coincide with one another on this special month: Valentine’s Day and celebrating Black History Month. It’s no coincidence that these fall on the same month because they both at a core represent love and respect. Take this month to show extra love and appreciation for others in your life.
Love: Valentine’s Day is February 14 (mark your calendar, it’s this Sunday)
There are tons of ways to show love for the special ones in your life. Special acts of affection could be buying flowers, preparing a nice dinner, desserts, etc. Although it doesn’t have to just be gift giving and on Valentine’s Day. Additional acts of kindness can look like:
Showing love to others – When we think of Valentine’s Day, we typically think of showering our significant others with love, gifts, and appreciation. But what about our family, colleagues, friends? Reach out to all those that you have love for and tell them how much you appreciate them in your life. Being plagued with so much hatred and violence this last year in particular, it’s important to show up for those that have made an impact on you. Extend a hand and your heart this year and show love for them, too.
Love isn’t limited to romance – Love doesn’t have to be just physical affection. The two words people love the most are: “Thank You.” Thank your family, friends, loved ones, and colleagues for everything they’ve done for you. A simple thank you can go so far and completely lighten up someone’s day.
Asking someone what they honestly think – This isn’t one that most people think about when it comes to Valentine’s Day, the day of love. But showing that you care about someone means asking their opinion. When was the last time you asked someone, “What do you think?” “What are you feeling about that?” This shows that you care deeply about their opinion and how they are feeling.
Appreciation: The unsung hero of Valentine’s Day
Ask for help on a project – Another way to show appreciation is to ask someone to help you on a project. Many people tell me that they feel overwhelmed because they have too much to do in too little time. Did you know that when you ask others for help, they actually feel valued? Generally, people want to help people. And they want to feel of use for others. Instead of worrying about delegating to others who you think don’t have the time either, consider involving them on your project. Ask about their thoughts and insights.
Final words
Yes, taking your special loved ones out to dinner, buying them flowers or a treat you know they will love is important. But it’s important to show love and respect to others, too. Ask yourself each day, what is one way I can show love?
