There’s Still Time to Celebrate Victory
As we begin the Autumn season, we are reminded that the year is quickly coming to an end, with only a few more months to achieve our annual goals. Yet, just like in a football game, there’s still time to reach them and score in the end zone.
I thought it would be fun and valuable to compare elements of business with football (you know I really do love sports). Please keep reading even if you’re not into sports. I encourage you to think about all the services you offer and the value of each offer.
Coaches are always focused on getting the highest score possible, and aware and willing to adjust on Game Day, before game day, and after the game.
When you are on offense, you are moving the ball down the field with the potential to score big.
When you are on defense, you’re experiencing scoring blocks (maybe your competition is making more progress than you, or your team is struggling in certain areas, or you're experiencing unexpected delays, etc.) and you’re just having to work harder to score.
What are the multiple ways for your business to score?
Below are football scoring possibilities
Touchdowns = 6 points – get in the end zone!
Field Goals = 3 points – if you didn’t get in the end zone, a sure way to increase points is to have a solid kicker to get half the total possible points.
Safety= 2 points – the defense of the opposing team captures the Quarterback in their end zone and scores.
Two-point conversions = 2 points – after the touchdown is scored, instead of going for a field goal the team can complete this bold play.
Extra point = 1 point- after the touchdown, the kicker is expected to make the extra point.
As you think of your business…
· What products or services are the touchdowns -generating the most revenue and profit in your world?
· Who’s making the touchdowns? Are your team members completing passes? Or are you/they getting sacked (this means you’re getting knocked down and unable to maximize your offensive opportunity.)
· When you find that you didn’t score big and get a touchdown, did you give up, or adjust to get some points (as in a field goal) so that you could keep moving toward the end zone and still celebrate a victory?
You get the point, right? We must stay focused and disciplined and be agile and adjust to win the game.
Speaking of adjustments, some questions about your roster and your game plan:
· People in your organization, are the right people in the right positions? What consistent training do you offer so they will deliver the best performance possible? How deep is your bench if someone leaves?
· Team environment- what’s your "locker room" feel like? Are the leaders emerging and speaking the same language? Is there a culture of excitement and improvement vs. stagnation? Are all the team members supportive, encouraging, and feeling as though they belong on the team?
· Clients- Are you retaining your key clients and letting go of those that are draining? Have you added the expected number of new clients this year? What kind of client do you still dream of that you’ve not yet acquired? What adjustments can you and your team make to turn the dream into reality?
· Customer Service – when is the last time you surveyed your clients to learn how you could improve, what you’re doing well and want to continue?
· Marketing and Sales – does your branding and messaging communicate your intention to your community, your market, and your stakeholders? Are your sales results matching the goals you set? Is what you want to be known for equal to what you are known for?
Yes, the fall season is upon us. This means my Saturdays are filled with watching and cheering for college teams (go Oregon Ducks) and Sundays are filled with watching and cheering for the pros in the National Football League (go LA Chargers and La Rams) and constantly checking my fantasy team.
It’s all about the SCOREBOARD! It’s all about getting to the finish line and celebrating the victory!
Stay focused. Your start does not determine how you’re going to finish. Herm Edwards, Head Coach New York Jets 2001-2005 and Kansas City Chiefs 2006-2008
