Build Courage to Lead People to Success
We are halfway through 2022 and you’re most likely evaluating your progress and hopefully celebrating achievements.
I recently led a workshop where one of the topics was essential leadership characteristics to lead people to success. Today I will share one of the key traits in my opinion: COURAGE. My intention is for you to become even more courageous to finish 2022 STRONG AND COURAGEOUS.
What does courage mean to you? Doing it afraid! Bravery. Audacity. Daring. What else would you add?
Below are four actions that I encourage you take, or continue if you’re already doing them:
1. Be Courageous enough to be Vulnerable
When I think of how I used to feel ashamed to share weaknesses, or frustrating thoughts and feelings I had that I didn’t dare speak about, I shudder. That was then. Now, I am grateful for my personal growth through following Brene Brown, John Maxwell, Simon Sinek, and others who taught me that vulnerability is a strength. I now realize that by being vulnerable, I allow others to also become vulnerable, authentic and confident.
When your team members see that you are vulnerable, you give them permission. Your relationship strengthens. Trust soars.
Remove your shame and doubt. Replace it with appreciation of your progress and willingness to expand your experiences and knowledge.
Who can you be vulnerable with to strengthen your relationships?
2. Be courageous enough to give honest feedback
Many leaders don’t give feedback to others and they have a few “reasons” like:
· Afraid to hurt the other person's feelings
· Don’t know how to give constructive feedback
· Don’t want the feedback to be misconstrued
· Others
I recently read this interesting stat in a Harvard Business Report: 74% of people expect the feedback by the time they receive it. What does that tell you?
I believe it tells us is that if we don’t give the feedback
we are letting our team members down and
diminishing the importance of quality work
losing an opportunity to gain trust and
an opportunity and commitment to equip them to excel.
As a leader, a very important element is people development. When we don’t convey how they can improve in a very clear manner, they don’t grow.
Who do you need to give feedback to so they can grow?
3. Be courageous enough to focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
I’ve been fortunate to consult and partner with companies who are committed to intentionally create inclusive cultures. They’ve stepped out of their comfort zones to embrace the benefits of a belonging culture.
One benefit all leaders care about is that profits increase by 34% when diversity exists, merely by the breadth of experiences, perspectives their team members bring to the table.
Another is that as new generations enter the workforce, they expect to work for companies that are diverse…
There are many benefits.
It can be invigorating for your team that works together to look and think the differently. Research also shows collaboration in diverse environments increases by 29%.
Maslow taught us on the the third level of his hierarchy triangle that we all need a safe place, we all need to belong. What's one action you can take to create an environment of trust where people feel that can speak up, exhale and feel as though they belong?
4. Be courageous enough to stop what’s not working and start something new
As you review your 2022 goals and timelines, have you accomplished everything you planned so far? If so, give yourself a pat on the back!
Evaluate why it worked (John Maxwell taught me that it’s not just our experiences that make us grow but it’s our evaluated experiences) and put a plan in place to continue what’s working.
If not, why not? Evaluate how you can tweak or, perhaps you need to take a big shift and stop those actions that aren’t fruitful. Or, perhaps it’s time to experience some pain that once you consistently do, you’ll push through the pain, look behind you and feel the joy.
I remember when I was so afraid of bridges, and I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge during one of my 39.3 walks with the Avon breast cancer organization. WOW was I exhilarated when I accomplished it…one step at a time.
I also remember that I didn’t do it alone-so many people encouraged me along the way before the walk and during it…
What do you need to stop or start and who can you include to cheer you on?
Speaking of breast cancer, I am still a walking warrior and committed to the cause of breast cancer. I donate a percentage of my revenue now and am blessed to be able to do contribute by fundraising and walking. If this is a cause that you care about, I invite you to visit my page and encourage you to donate so we can continue to research and find a cure! Let me know how I can help you with tools to become an even more effective leader.
I'm looking for more individuals like you, who are committed to cross the bridge from where they are, and take the right steps to narrow gaps...at work, at home and in the community.
Abundance to you!!!
